I have no idea what to expect. I've literally never been to a film festival before. I'm probably going to enjoy it a lot and wish I had bought more than the $50 4 screening pass, but this is a busy week for me and it will be hard for me to even find the time to do the 4 screenings.

As for my plan of action or whatever, I don't have anything set in stone about which films I'm going to see yet. If you wanted for me to have that all planned out then I apologize but I can't really have that ready right now as I don't know my schedule for the rest of the week. I did however look over the list of films briefly and have a few ideas for ones that jump out at me. I'll probably try to go to Georg K's native American documentary.  After that Lords of Chaos, 8 Slices, A Hand, Escape the Ninja, Bonfires are all films that look intriguing to me (I haven't looked closely at the whole list though I'm sure there are others that will jump out at me).

3 actionable challenges? I guess to go up to the film makers of 3 films that I enjoyed? I'm not really nervous about going up to a film maker and telling them their movie was awesome, so its not really a challenge for me, and if I don't feel strongly enough about what I saw I'm not going to go up to them and give them fake praise. Hopefully though all four films I see will be awesome and I will feel inclined to talk to them anyway!

I only recently rediscovered my passion and desire to work in the film industry, which had been my dream as a child. This is my second time going to college - the first ended abysmally since I didn't have the discipline or motivation to succeed and probably should have taken several years off from school after graduating high school. Instead I joined UNCG as a communications major after much prodding from my parents, where I was told (along with about 200 other students in a large auditorium) that no one from that school had ever gone on to any success in the film industry. Response - Maya Deren presentation

I liked how this presentation had an emphasis on images over words. One of my biggest problems with my presentation was that some of the slides were just a ton of words, but I needed it written down to talk about it. I was impressed that they seemed to generally know what to say about each slide even if there were no words at all. As for Maya Deren herself, she sounds like a fascinating person who was really ahead of her time. I think something this school should take in consideration is not showing us Meshes of the Afternoon 7,000 times by the time we are seniors, at this point I hate it (and I thought it was really cool the first time I saw it) and unfortunately it was the only thing I had to associate with Maya Deren. It was nice to see that she did in fact make other films, films that look pretty interesting in their own right.

These were some solid general guidelines, but after reading this I honestly don't feel any more prepared or motivated than I was previously. To me it is all written like one of those corny motivational posters I saw in middle and high school with a picture of a guy climbing a mountain and a generic phrase about conquering your fears or something. Don't get me wrong, everything in the Student 7 is solid advice, but these are all things I've been trying to do regardless. There isn't really any specific advice, it's just basically saying "learn all the technical aspects of the equipment you are using!" and "form a solid crew with good group dynamics!", stuff that should really be obvious I would think. I hope this doesn't sound too cynical, I've just never been a huge fan of this kind of vague motivational stuff.
