Sound observation - outside my apartment at 1 AM

The most dominating noise is the blowing air of several of my neighbors AC units, which combine into a single noise. They apparently like being freezing as their units seem to be on permanently. Next I notice crickets - to my left there are several that have combined into that "cricket noise" we all know that I personally associate with summer and being out in the country. It sounds like no more than 5 or 6 though, not a large symphony. To my right I hear a single cricket who only makes his noise every few seconds. Somewhere in the distance a motorcycle or a car without a muffler buzzes down the street. Closer by a car drives down the road behind my apartment building. Water gurgles in the walls from someone's AC. A different, loud mechanical noise comes from the ground floor below me as some form of machinery turns on. Moments later I hear the same noise from the neighboring building. Then right behind me, my AC unit turns back on, drowning everything else out.

Note about these AC units I keep mentioning: my apartment complex doesn't allow us to turn them off for some reason, even when you set it to 80 degrees it turns on every few minutes. Extremely annoying when I'm trying to watch a movie.

I only recently rediscovered my passion and desire to work in the film industry, which had been my dream as a child. This is my second time going to college - the first ended abysmally since I didn't have the discipline or motivation to succeed and probably should have taken several years off from school after graduating high school. Instead I joined UNCG as a communications major after much prodding from my parents, where I was told (along with about 200 other students in a large auditorium) that no one from that school had ever gone on to any success in the film industry. Response - Maya Deren presentation

I liked how this presentation had an emphasis on images over words. One of my biggest problems with my presentation was that some of the slides were just a ton of words, but I needed it written down to talk about it. I was impressed that they seemed to generally know what to say about each slide even if there were no words at all. As for Maya Deren herself, she sounds like a fascinating person who was really ahead of her time. I think something this school should take in consideration is not showing us Meshes of the Afternoon 7,000 times by the time we are seniors, at this point I hate it (and I thought it was really cool the first time I saw it) and unfortunately it was the only thing I had to associate with Maya Deren. It was nice to see that she did in fact make other films, films that look pretty interesting in their own right.

These were some solid general guidelines, but after reading this I honestly don't feel any more prepared or motivated than I was previously. To me it is all written like one of those corny motivational posters I saw in middle and high school with a picture of a guy climbing a mountain and a generic phrase about conquering your fears or something. Don't get me wrong, everything in the Student 7 is solid advice, but these are all things I've been trying to do regardless. There isn't really any specific advice, it's just basically saying "learn all the technical aspects of the equipment you are using!" and "form a solid crew with good group dynamics!", stuff that should really be obvious I would think. I hope this doesn't sound too cynical, I've just never been a huge fan of this kind of vague motivational stuff.
