Final response
This was one of my most difficult classes so far at UNCW but also one of my favorites. I learned a fair amount more of Premiere through the projects within this class, which I'm really thankful for as I'm right now leaning towards becoming an editor. I can't say how I've specifically grown as a film maker, as I think that's hard to say as this class has just ended. I definitely learned more about working with a group when we are behind on a deadline, as the installation project was pretty stressful towards the end.
Overall I will take with me some pretty good memories from this class. I really liked the emphasis on group work, I'm not naturally the most social person and being older than almost everyone else can make it difficult sometimes to connect with classmates. So I REALLY appreciate how you made the groups yourself without letting us form our own. I think I know a lot of people in this class much better than at the beginning, but if we had had to form our own groups at the beginning I would have been kind of lost. I wish more teachers would form the groups themselves instead of letting everyone work with who they want, which just leads to groups of friends working together and leaves the people who don't know anyone else kind of left out. My only complaint with the mandatory groups was that you said that we would end up working with everyone else in the class. I worked with every other guy, most of them twice, but only one girl in the entire class! I'm sure that was an accidental oversight but I was a little disappointed by this. I'm also disappointed that we didn't get to do the music video, personally I would have much rather done that instead of the installation (and maybe over the self portrait also).
This class had as much work as any of my two other classes combined, but I think that was a good thing. I'm the type of person that is generally happier when I have stuff to do, and I think this class definitely pushed me harder than most of my other classes at this school, not just this semester. Although I can't say what I learned from this class yet I'm sure in 6 months I'll be able to look back and see that it was a considerable amount.
One other positive thing - I really liked how most of the projects weren't restrictive as far as our creativity. I would much rather do a project like our 1d edits where the only restriction is the source material, than be told to make a short film about social media or something like that.

I am so happy that you felt comfortable in the class and were able to stretch your ideas. I am super disappointed (in myself!) that I didn't catch that you didn't work with the other women in class much! I think that is definitely one place that Florence through me off. Missing the music video created a challenge in mixing things up and I may have gotten a little more sloppy. Next time I will keep a close eye on this!
ReplyDeleteHope to see you in class in the future Matt!
